There are great views and there are great golf courses, rarely do they come together with such perfection as they do at Langland Bay. High above the golden Gower sand is a cliff top clearly designed by nature with only one purpose in mind, breathtaking golf. The elevation brings 360-degree views, across the spectacular Bristol Channel in one direction, and the distant Brecon Beacons in the other. This is Langland Bay, where every drive has an astonishing backdrop and every club has a part to play. Keep your head down? You must be joking. A parkland course with magnificent coastal views. Although a relatively short course, the prevailing winds can sometimes add many yards and strokes to one’s score.

The 6th hole is a 449yard par 4, which ranks with any in its degree of difficulty and requirement for accuracy and length. The 8th, a comparatively short par 4 designed by James Braid, has a spectacular view from the medal tee of sheer beauty, looking as it does at the bays of Caswell, Pwlldu and Brandy Cove. Even Lundy is seen in the distance on a fine day. The golfer drinks in the scenery then looks for a birdie if only the drive can be hit true.

The par five 15th leads us back to Langland Bay and possibly the most memorable hole on the course, the 16th, known as “Death or Glory” where trouble abounds. Failure to find the shelved green from 153 yards has spoiled many a Medal Card.

A welcome awaits the golfer in the well-appointed clubhouse, which was originally a farmhouse.
