Porthmadog Golf Club
Porthmadog Golf Club is situated only a mile or so from Clough Williams Ellis’ world-famous Italiante village at Porthmeirion where TV series “The Prisoner “ was filmed, and Porthmadog’s intriguing mixture of heath and links land can be just as captivating. Created at the turn of the century by James Braid, the genius course designer of his day and contains charm and character in abundance.
Porthmadog provides some of the most stunning vistas that you are likely to encounter, but also delivers a stern test of golf that weaves menacingly through the sand dunes of Tremadog Bay.
Standing on the 1st tee, gorse and bumpy fairways are evident, everything as it should be. After the short 2nd the links give way to heath land, but it is none the worse for that, especially with the presence of water making itself felt. After a tough start, the short par 3 6th immediately precedes back to back par 5s which, if they are played well, both offer good opportunities to pick up shots.
The back nine head for the sea, and some beautiful scenery, and the course is transformed into pure links that has been likened to a miniature Troon. Many claim that these are the most natural nine holes in Wales. The par four 12th, first of two signature holes, requires a drive over a small bay and then a second shot played to a plateau green.
None come tougher and more fascinating than the 14th. Called the “Himalayas “this is a 387 yards par four that demands your drive over a huge natural bunker that hides the fairway from the tee. Following immediately after the scenic delights of the 13th cliff top tee this will ensure a memorable round.
Located on the Llyn Peninsula, Porthmadog remains one of the most enjoyable tests of seaside golf anywhere on the British Isles.
